Euphoniums and Baritones

Solo Baritone – Bob Morton

Bob was introduced to banding at the age of 9 upon joining Dudley Colliery Junior Band, where he was taught by Harold Laycock (1st Trombone with the legendary St Hilda’s band). He progressed along the line until a move to Horn beckoned, progressing eventually to the Solo Horn chair. With the demise of the coal industry the band was no more and a move to the nearby Backworth Colliery Band on Solo Horn was made. Bob moved to Solo Euphonium after a time and remained with Backworth for 17 years.

The championship section beckoned and Bob played Solo Baritone with Easington Colliery Band, before moving to the British Steel Teesside Band on Baritone initially, but then to Solo Horn where he stayed for 11 successful years winning many prizes.

Bob has also done quite a bit of conducting in his time in banding with some notable success at the helm of Gateshead Brass (formerly the Northumbria Police Band) leading them to the 1st section title and promotion back to the championship section, and a very successful period conducting Pride Valley Brass (Formerly Silksworth Band) winning both the mineworkers second section and the Whitehaven titles.

There followed a stint with the Ransome band on first baritone as well as a three stints at the Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band on Solo Baritone. Bob had intended retiring from playing and was out for a year or so but having helped out on Baritone at Yorkshire Imps under conductor David Nesbitt, this rekindled Bob’s interest in playing, leading to his transfer to the East Yorkshire Motor Services Band in January 2014 on solo Baritone. Bob returned to Yorkshire Imps in 2015

Bob is training director for Learner Driving Centres. He is responsible for developing and implementing new techniques for teaching people to drive and becoming driving instructors. He can be seen in action on the company YouTube channel delivering such techniques.
Bob is a keen gardener, winemaker and is a certified wine judge. Bob is delighted to be part of team LADA at Yorkshire Imps (Alan Morrison once having told Bob he thought Baritones were made from LADA car doors, Bob continued the joke with the birth of team LADA)

2nd Euphonium – Darren Sunderland

Darren is such an experienced player with a great ability. Put a piece of music in front of him and he will play it.
Most of the band find it hard to understand Darren – he’s from Barnsley!
