Charles Beresford has recently graduated from the University of Huddersfield and the tuition of Shawn Crowther, and receiving the Harry Mortimer Memorial Trust Award and Armitage Brass Band award.

We are technically the first brass band that Charles has joined on a permanent basis, and we hope that we are the last. Charles is a great addition to the team.

A Manxman by birth, Mark learnt to play tenor horn in the school band before progressing to Douglas Town Band and the Manx National Youth Band. He joined the Yorkshire Imperial Band in 1973 whilst at Leeds University, and was to remain a member of the horn section until 1984 when promotion took him to London. During his eleven years at Imps the band were National Champions in 1978, British Open Champions in 1981 and Yorkshire Area Champions on no less than six occasions.

Whilst in London, Mark played first baritone with the Aveley Band and conducted the Medway Band. He enjoyed significant success as a conductor taking Medway from second to championship section in four years.

On his return to Yorkshire in 1990 he became musical director of the Lockwood Band, leading the band to victory in the Yorkshire first section area and a top six place in the National Championships.

Professional commitments put an end to his work with brass bands for many years. Mark returned to banding in 2010, playing Euphonium in Drighlington Band. He rejoined Imps on Eb bass in 2013.

His favourite brass band pieces are Pageantry by Herbert Howells and Cloudcatcher Fells by McCabe.
