New Beat at the Heart of Yorkshire Imps

The world famous Yorkshire Imperial Urquhart Travel Band are delighted to announce the appointment of Musical Director Martin Heartfield. The band have been actively searching for an MD to work alongside Associate Conductor Russell Gray. The band thought it was important to get the right candidate so were not in a rush to appoint.

Band Chairman Bob Morton said “Having waited and seen many potential candidates the band were rewarded for their patience with an MD who we feel will be exactly the “right fit” This we felt was important in our drive to honour our illustrious history. His ability, drive, determination and enthusiasm will push the band back to where we feel we belong”.

There is a real buzz around the stand as we wait in anticipation and excitement for Martins first official rehearsal as Imps new “man in the middle”

Martin will take the baton officially for the first time this coming Thursday 28th July.

Martin said “I am delighted and honoured to have the opportunity to work with such a famous band and am looking forward to working with all the players. The plans for the future are ambitious and exciting and I am looking forward to a very successful partnership.”

Christmas Concert at Christ Church

Join world famous and local Yorkshire Imperial David Urquhart Travel Band at their Christmas Concert this year at Christ Church, Ossett on the 3rd December. The concert will begin at 19.30.

We are looking forward to the first collaboration with Christ Church and hope to make this a successful event to repeat annually. We hope you will come along and join in the festivities to mark the beginning of the Christmas Season.

Gray to Lead Area Contest Battle

The Yorkshire Imperial Urqhuart Travel Band is pleased to announce that Russell Gray will lead them to the 2017 Yorkshire Regional Contest. The set test piece is Herbert Howells, Pageantry. The band hopes this collaboration to be a successful one that will secure Imps’ status as a Championship Section band and one to build upon for the future.


A former member of the Black Dyke Band, Russell Gray is currently Adjunct Professor at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music (Australia), Musical Director of the National Youth Brass Band of Scotland and has enjoyed working with many varied ensembles including Her Majesty’s Band of the Coldstream Guards, the Prince of Denmark’s Brass Ensemble, The Danish Royal Life Guards Band, Cambrian Philharmonic Orchestra, Wrexham Symphony Orchestra, the Queensland Pops Orchestra, the Mueller International Chamber Orchestra, and the Aalborg Symphony Orchestra.

Band Chairman Mark Tweedle told A4B: “Russell is one of the most successful and sought after conductors in banding. His considerable experience at the highest level, both as a performer and conductor, will be invaluable in preparing the band to deliver on the contest stage. This appointment is a clear indication of the band’s determination to  develop both musically and technically.”

Imps secure signings after Bolsover Victory

After a busy summer auditioning new conductors and preparing for the next concert and contest season, Yorkshire Imps have welcomed some key signings which have lead the way to the band’s first British Entertainment contest win since 1995!


Bolsover saw the band compete against 12 other championship section bands, picking up the Best Soloist Prize for Ginnette Baker’s rendition of Over the Rainbow, arranged by Ray Farr, with adjudicator Roger Webster remarking: “almost forgot to write, great playing from band and soloist.”

New Faces at Imps

We would like to welcome David Notley who has joined the band on Soprano Cornet. He has played with top flight bands such as the Brighouse and Rastrick Band, Black Dyke Mills Band and more recently Wingates, whom he helped secure a place for the upcoming National Finals in London.

We would like to welcome back Henning Walker back to the cornet section. Henning was a valuable player and we are pleased he has returned to Huddersfield to carry on his studies and more IMPortantly, returning back to the band. We also welcome Peter Kench who has joined the cornet line from Barton Town Band.


Welcoming Ben Scrivener to the Baritone section, we are sure he will learn a lot under the watchful eye of Bob. 10407953_315635901958626_1480659291738682528_n

We are sad to say goodbye to Matthew on 2nd trombone, but wish him all the best in his new career path. We are happy to announce that Lewis Blackmore will be replacing Matthew.

We would also like to welcome Charles Beresford to the Bass section who has recently graduated from the University of Huddersfield and the tuition of Shawn Crowther, and receiving the Harry Mortimer Memorial Trust Award and Armitage Brass Band award. Also joining our bass section, we have John Grayson joining us a very successful tenure with Stannington Brass, who have been in fine form and look forward to promotion to the 1st section.

We are looking forward to the future and hope that all players have a successful career with the band.

A Night of Memories

Join us for a stroll down “memory lane” when world famous and local Yorkshire Imperial David Urquhart Travel Band performs Vera Lynn Classics and other hits to celebrate and remember those who have fought for queen and country.

The Yorkshire Imperial Band look forward to performing at Trinity Church, Ossett, again and marks another successful collaboration with the increasingly popular concert venue. The concert will be held on Saturday 12th November and will begin at 19.30pm.
